Metropolitan Hilarion Alfeyev was born in 1966. He studied violin, piano and
composition at the Moscow's Gnessins School of Music and at the Moscow State
Conservatoire. In 1987 he was ordained priest of the Russian Orthodox
Church, and in 2002 he was consecrated bishop. He has been living and
working in Austria since 2003.
Metropolitan Hilarion holds doctorates in philosophy from the University of Oxford
(1995) and in theology from the St Sergius Orthodox Theological Institute in
Paris (1999). He is the author of more than 600 publications, including 20
books which have been translated into several languages.
Metropolitan Hilarion's musical compositions include the 'Four poems by Federico
Garcia Lorca' for tenor and piano (1984), the 'Divine Liturgy' for choir a
cappella (2006), the 'All-Night Vigil' for choir and soloists (2006), the
'St Matthew Passion' for soloists, choir and string orchestra (2006), the
'Christmas Oratorio' for soloists, two choirs and symphony orchestra (2007),
the 'Memento' for symphony orchestra (2008), the 'Song of the Ascents', a
symphony for choir and orchestra (2008).
