Dear friends,

Welcome to our site of modern Orthodox music.

By modern orthodox music we mean music of religious content written by Orthodox composers during the last several years. We consider 1988, the year when we celebrated the Millennium of the Baptism of Russia, to be  the starting point of the Orthodox present.

What kind of modern Orthodox music existis now?

First of all it’s music related to divine worship performed in church. It’s intended to enlarge and intensify the state of praying. According to the Orthodox Devine Service tradition, it’s music for choir only. Secondly, it’s spiritual music which is performed at concerts; it’s all-sufficient, composed to deliver the theological and moral matter of the texts to the audience through the emotional experience in a concert hall environment. Such music certainly is of missionary importance, they often use singing voices escorted by different instruments or by the orchestra in it. The instrumental music without words, using familiar orthodox service texts, refers here too.

And thirdly it’s music combining divine worship features and concert value.

Does the Church need new spiritual music written by our contemporaries? There exists Znamenny Raspev (Znamenny Chant) and its derivatives, after all; there is obikhod singing. Besides a lot of spiritual concerts that have been written since the times of Bortnyanski.

But we think that now, in the early 21st century, when we know and can accomplish many things, spiritual music is necessary and essential.

The church choirs repertoire along with the concert repertoire needs renovation. They mostly sing the works of the 19th century composers at the choir places and religious concerts. As for the spiritual music of the 20th – early 21st centuries, it hasn’t become divine service customary yet and is seldom heard at concerts.

Modern spiritual music distribution in e-form (in a digital format) through the Internet makes this music available to the church choir masters and to the secular musicians wishing to perform religious music at concerts.

The “Church composer” site has a separate web page for each composer writing Orthodox spiritual music, were you can find scores and also audio and video records of the singing. This music undergoes an examination at the Advisory Council, which consists of the clergy, choir masters and Union of Russian Composers members. We will also publish some articles dedicated to the current problems in modern Orthodox music.
